A Commitment to Community: From Rebuilding Shreveport's Streets to Seasoning Its Tables with Mediterranean Soul
My name is Siavosh (Sia) F. Ravari. My story began when I officially moved to the U.S. in 1982 and lived in Houston for most of my life. At the time, the city’s downtown area was struggling with high crime rates, and I decided I wanted to take action to help rebuild the community. In 1986, a few neighbors and I purchased a storefront and turned it into a police station for the city. I have supported the police department without an official title or position ever since. By 1991, Houston had become one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. I met my wife in 1990 in Houston. She moved to Shreveport in 2000 while completing her residency at LSU, and we decided to make the move permanent when our first child was born in 2004. Our second child followed in 2008. Since then, I have been a proud member of the community. Shreveport was once a prosperous city, but it slowly began to decline, even before the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years, conditions have worsened: crime has increased, businesses have closed, and people, especially members of the next generation, have moved elsewhere. Our city has a proud history, strong families and hardworking people who deserve a future filled with opportunity, safety and prosperity. But too many residents feel left behind by rising costs, aging infrastructure and a lack of opportunity. It is time for a new direction, one focused on rebuilding the foundations of a city we once proudly called home.
